Fraser River Run largest since 1913

Sockeye Salmon have not trekked up the Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada with the furry o f this seasons’ run since 1913, when the Hells Gate Landslide destroyed fish escapement.
The Fraser will see and estimated 25 million Sockeye this season with a six pound average weight. 12 million pounds will be harvested, while the US is allotted 1.9 million. This run is a reminder that the Fraser once produced escapements of 40 million in the early 20th Century. However, the Hells Gate landslide fatally altered the run of Sockeye in the river, prompting the US to donate for the building of fish ladders.
Although the river was closed to commercial fishing the past two seasons, only 2 million Sockeye made the trip in 2009. As a result of short returns, processing capacity has been set to meet the rivers lower production.
With the exciting explosion of Sockeye this season, Canada producers are scurrying to keep up with offloads. The fish can only be caught as fast as it is processed. The flood of the market is allowing for Sockeye prices unseen for years.
The Sockeye Northport is offering are from the Johnstone Strait. These Sockeye are destined for the Fraser, but are ocean caught. They have a brilliant bright skin color with red meat.
We are optimistic that this is a sign of great things to come. However, with low escapements in years past, this Sockeye run could be an aberration. So act quick before the Fraser run ends in mid September.
